[hymenoptaecins]
A cationic glycine-rich protein of 93 amino acids found in the honeybee (Apis mellifera). The protein contains a 2-pyrrolidone-5-carboxylic acid at the N-terminus. Under physiological conditions, the protein inhibits viability of Gram-negative bacteria and Gram-positive bacteria, including several human pathogens. Lethal effects against Escherichia coli involves permeabilization of outer and inner membranes (Casteels et al, 1993). Casteels-Josson et al (2004) have reported that sizable experimental infections are required for induction of the normally silent hymenoptaecin gene.
Bee hymenoptaecin is produced by a precursor with a signal sequence and a pro-sequence which, needs to be processed to obtain the mature and bioactive antimicrobial peptide
