This term refers to the neoplastic transformation and abnormal proliferation of hematopoietic cells (see also: hematopoiesis) and can involve any of the developmental stages of myeloid cells or lymphoid cells. By definition, leukemia involves the bone marrow. Different types of leukemia often are classified by cell lineage (myeloid leukemia, lymphoid leukemia), or by clinical course, as chronic or acute.
