Name of a mutation that arose spontaneously in C57BL/6J mice. The mutation maps to the distal end of chromosome 6. Two alleles of this locus are known, designated me and mev (viable me). The disease in homozygotes of mev/mev is very similar to that of me/me mice but progresses more slowly.
A few days after birth animals homozygous for the recessive me locus develop subepidermal lesions, which disrupt hair follicles and pigmentation and give the mice their characteristic motheaten appearance.
