this term, as well as proteinase and also peptidase are frequently und usually used indiscriminately for proteolytic enzymes that degrade proteins by hydrolysis of peptide bonds, i.e., they function as peptide bond hydrolases. According to proposed nomenclature, the term protease (= peptidase) should be the more general term for enzymes that act as peptide bond hydrolases.
