[protein domain, protein domagne, motifs, sequence motifs, mosaic protein]
Any identifiable longer contiguous subsequence within a protein sequence that is identified by sequence and structure comparison as a region of homology within different proteins. Such domains may occur in single or multiple copies. Outside this region of homology these proteins may not show any further matches or homology. Many proteins contain more than one identifiable protein domain, which act as separate units in the sequence and fold as separate domains. These proteins are often being referred to as mosaic proteins. A sequence motif may comprise only a few amino acids or can also be a more complex combination of several short sequences. Note that frequently the two terms motif and domain appear to be used interchangeably.
