[apoptosis antigen-1] also abbr. APT1. This antigen was originally found to be expressed on the cell surface of activated human T-lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes and a variety of malignant human lymphoid cell lines. Expression of the cell surface protein has been shown to be induced by the HIV virus-encoded tat protein.
The APO-1 antigen is a transmembrane glycoprotein of 48 kDa encoded by a gene on human chromosome 10q24.1. APO-1 is identical with FAS antigen, a cysteine-rich transmembrane protein of 335 amino acids originally defined by a mouse monoclonal antibody. The antigen displays significant similarity to members of the TNF receptor superfamily
