[apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD] This protein of 22 kDa (1995 amino acids) has been identified by Masumoto et al (1999) by its appearance as a speck during apoptosis induced by retinoic acid and other anti-tumor drugs in HL-60 cells. The protein forms insoluble aggregates during apoptosis due to interactions between the N-terminal pyrin domain (PYD) and CARD domains (Masumoto et al, 2001). The protein is identical with TMS1 [target of methylation-induced silencing-1] and PYCARD. Another designation is CARD5 [caspase recruitment domain-containing protein-5].
