[autophagy-related-5] This gene is known also as APG5L [APG5-like] or APG5 [Autophagy protein 5]. The cDNA encodes a protein (276 amino acids) with sequence similarity to Saccharomyces cerevisiae APG5 involved in autophagy and has been cloned by Hammond et al (1998).
The protein has been identified independently by Grand et al (1995) as ASP [apoptosis-specific protein] and has been shown to be identical with POT1 (protection of telomeres-1).
Nakagawa et al (2004) have suggested that ATG5 is part of the autophagy
