Achacin
Achacin is a glycoprotein purified from the giant African snail, Achatina fulica Ferussac (Otsuka-Fuchino et al, 1992). The cloned cDNA codes for a mature protein of 502 amino acids (Obara et al, 1992) that shows sequence homology with Aplysianin A from the sea hare.
The protein is a humoral defense factor and is bactericidal for Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria in their growing states. The protein has been shown to inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas fluorescens, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Streptococcus faecalis in addition to Escherichia coli
