The cDNA encoding this rat protein has been identified by Merenmies et al (1991). It encodes the 30 kDa heparin-binding protein the expression of which is developmentally regulated in brain. Expression levels of the mRNA encoding amphoterin are strongly reduced after the rapid perinatal growth phase of the rat brain. The protein has been shown to enhance neurite outgrowth in cerebral neurons. Antibodies against amphoterin in the culture media strongly inhibit the outgrowth of cytoplasmic processes.
This protein is identical with the nonhistone chromosomal protein HMG-1 and has been isolated independently also as DEF [Differentiation enhancing factor].
