[Anopheles stephensi 60A] Crampton and Luckhart (2001) have isolated As60A, the 60A homolog of Drosophila melanogaster 60A from the malaria vector Anopheles stephensi. The gene gives rise to at least four different splice variants.
Expression of As60A is induced in the midgut and carcass of Anopheles stephensi in response to Plasmodium infection and correlates with periods of parasite motility and reproduction. Expression is induced only by high numbers of parasites and thus As60A may be a component of the immune response to Plasmodium infection, in analogy to involvement of TGF-beta-1 in the mammalian immune response to Plasmodium.
