(approved gene symbol) [complement component C6; complement factor 6] C6 is one of five late-acting proteins of complement formed during complement activation that participate in the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC), a multiprotein assembly that perforates bacterial cell membranes by forming transmembrane channels (DiScipio and Hugli, 1989). The complement membrane attack complex is formed by the sequential assembly of C5b, one copy each of C6, C7, and C8 and 12-14 copies of C9 (Aleshin et al, 2012).

The liver is the major source of complement components (Brauer et al, 1994), but extrahepatic sources may contribute to inflammation. C6 has been shown to be produced by monocytes (Hetland et al, 1986), macrophages (Pettersen et al, 1987; Qian Z et al, 1999), fibroblasts ... ... ... ... ...
