Monocytes, which are present in all vertebrates (Ginhoux and Jung, 2014), are bone marrow-derived mononuclear phagocytes that circulate in the blood and are then recruited into tissues (Geissmann et al, 2010; Ziegler-Heitbrock et al, 2014; Patel et al, 2017). Occasionally, the term leukomonocytes is used synonymously. These cells are precursors for macrophages and dendritic cells. After their formation and release by the bone marrow, monocytes enter the bloodstream and circulate for about 36 hours while they mature into macrophages (see also: monocytopoiesis).
