the R stands for "restricted" and refers to the fact that CD99, identified as the 32 kDa E2 antigen, displays an isomorphism: two epitopes (defined by monoclonal antibodies O662 and L129) are widely distributed on all T-cells. Two other epitopes defined by monoclonal antibodies D44 and 12E7 are restricted to T-cell subsets (hence the designation CD99R (R = restricted) (Gelin et al, 1991).
