[compound of designation yellow 1] CDy1 is a fluorescent derivative of a rosamine dye that selectively stains pluripotent stem cells (Im et al, 2010; Kang et al, 2011), showing 12.2-fold higher fluorescence intensity in embryonic stem cells when compared to mouse embryonic fibroblasts. It also stains induced pluripotent stem cells at a time when the expression of a reporter gene GFP-labelled OCT4) is not detectable. Vendrell et al (2012) have used CDy1 as a reporter for the rapid screening of chemicals in reprogramming induced pluripotent stem cells, identifying novel small molecules enhancing the generation of such cells.
