[Cell death protein 4] CED4 is expressed primarily during embryogenesis of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. Mutations in the CED4 gene (549 amino acids) block almost all of the cell deaths by apoptosis that normally occur during development (Yuan and Horvitz, 1992). CED4 and human APAF-1 and Drosophila melanogaster HAC-1 are considered homologous.
