Name given to the cytoplasmic juxtamembrane region of the p75 neurotrophin receptor (p75NTR), which behaves like a death domain and has been found to be necessary and sufficient to initiate neural cell death by apoptosis (Coulson et al, 2000).
A peptide of 29 amino acids corresponding to this region induces apoptotic cell death in a variety of neural and non-neural cell types. Cell death is not inhibited by signaling through Trk receptor. CHOPPER triggers cell death only in a lipid-anchored membrane form. Non-anchored CHOPPER acts in a dominant-negative manner and blocks cell death mediated by p75NTR
