Caerulein, also Cerulein or Ceruletide, was isolated originally from Hyla caerulea (for overview see: Erspamer, 1970). The peptide is present in the skins of Hyla caerulea and other Australian hylid frogs (Anastasi et al, 1968; De Caro et al, 1968), of Leptodactylus pentadactylus labyrinthicus, related South American leptodactylid frogs, and of the South African amphibian Xenopus laevis (Anastasi et al, 1970). The Xenopus laevis gene has been cloned by Richter et al (1986). Wakabayashi et al (1985) have reported the mRNA sequence of the caerulein precursor in the skin of Xenopus laevis.
