abbr. CHRD. Abbr. also: Chd. This protein (941 amino acids) was identified initially in Xenopus laevis as a key developmental protein that dorsalizes early vertebrate embryonic tissues (Sasai et al, 1994). Expression of the protein is induced by Activin A.
Chordin is a secreted protein that contains four copies of a small cysteine-rich domain of (about 70 amino acids each), which are involved in binding and regulation of bone morphogenetic proteins (Larrain et al, 2000). This type of protein motif is found in a variety of other proteins (see also: Kielin, Neuralin-1, Ventroptin).
