abbr. VOPT. Chicken ventroptin acts as an antagonist of BMP4. It is expressed mainly in the ventral retina (Sakuta et al, 2001).
The protein contains a putative signal peptide and 3 cysteine-rich repeats similar to those found in other proteins interacting with BMP4 (see: chordin). Ventroptin is likely to be a secreted protein as it is found in the conditioned medium of chick embryonic fibroblasts infected with a recombinant virus expressing ventroptin (Sakuta et al, 2001).
