The acronym DN stands for "double-negative". This refers to a population of immature T-cells (thymocytes) that do not express the CD antigens CD4 or CD8. A subpopulation of these cells with the phenotype CD4(-) CD8(-), CD25(-), CD44(+) possesses multi-lineage potential and can differentiate into B-cells, T-cells, myeloid cells, NK-cells and dendritic cells (Ardavin et al, 1993; Matsuzaki et al, 1993; Moore and Zlotnik, 1995; Shortman and Wu, 1996; Wu et al, 1996; Pear et al, 2004).
