Deltorphins are endogenous linear heptapeptides, isolated from skin extracts of frogs belonging to the genus Phyllomedusa. The peptides have a higher affinity and selectivity for delta opioid binding sites than any other natural compound known. Deltorphin with the sequence Tyr-D-Met-Phe-His-Leu-Met-Aspamide (YMFHLMDamide) has been identified by Kreil et al (1989) who cloned the cDNA precursor from a library prepared from skin of Phyllomedusa sauvagei (for cDNA precursors see also: Richter et al, 1990).
