Desmoglein-2 (gene symbol: DSG2) is a membrane protein that is acomponent of intercellular desmosome junctions. The protein has been described originally as HDGC [human-desmoglein-colon] (Koch et al, 1991). A databank synonym is CDHF5 [Cadherin family member 5].
Desmoglein-2 is important in mediating cell-cell adhesion and is expressed in all cells forming desmosomes. Some cells, such as melanoma cells, which do not form desmosomes, have been reported to express desmoglein-2 (Schmitt et al, 2007).
