[Dorsal-related immunity factor] This Drosophila protein, encoded by gene CG6794, is a transcription factor related to fly NF-kappa-B (see: Relish) and plays a role in fly immunity. Dif is present in insect immune organs (fat bodies and hemocytes) (Ip et al, 1993; Petersen et al, 1995) and accumulates in nuclei upon microbial infection (Ip et al, 1993; Petersen et al, 1995). Dif is expressed at high levels at postembryonic stages (Ip et al, 1993) and can rescue to some extent the dorsal mutant phenotype in the early embryo (Stein et al, 1998).
Dif is retained in the cytoplasm of healthy unchallended flies by binding to the I-kappa-B
