(approved gene symbol) [EGF-like-6; EGF-like domain containing protein-6] The EGFL6 gene (human Xp22 chromosome) has been identified by Yeung et al (1999). The gene is expressed in fetal lung, fetal skin, fetal umbilical cord, fetal liver/spleen, and placenta, but not in normal adult tissues, including lung. The gene is expressed also in lung tumors and meningiomas. Buchner et al (2000) have cloned the same gene and called it MAEG [MAM and EGF containing gene]. The MAEG gene maps to human chromosome Xp22 and is expressed early in development.
The predicted EGFL6 protein (553 amino acids) contains a signal sequence, which suggests that it is secreted. The protein contains 4 complete and one partial
