This factor, which supports epidermal epithelial cell movement (see also: motogenic cytokines), has been purified from mammalian serum and plasma (Stenn, 1981). The purified factor has been shown to be necessary and sufficient for outgrowth of epithelial sheets from skin explants, and causes epiboly (epithelial sheet movement over a floating skin explant; hence its name). The activity of the purified factor is augmented more than 10-fold by a second fraction of plasma (which alone supports no cell spreading and is referred to as coepibolin). For its maximal effect coepibolin must be present continuously in the early phases of cell spreading.
