[Fasciola hepatica helminth defence molecule 1] FhHDM-1 is a peptide secreted by Fasciola hepatica. It is related to the antimicrobial peptide LL-37 with respect to biochemical and functional characteristics (Robinson et al, 2011). FhHDM-1 can be processed by Fasciola hepatica cathepsin L1 to yield a bioactive C-terminal fragment of 34 residues. This is analogous to the proteolytic processing of the cathelicidin CAP-18 to release LL-37, which modulates innate cell activation by classical Toll-like receptor ligands such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS).
