LPS

[lipopolysaccharide] this term is used frequently to denote a component of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria (see: endotoxins). It is also used for any compound consisting of covalently linked lipids and polysaccharides. The terms smooth LPS (abbr. S-LPS) and rough LPS (abbr. R-LPS) refer to variant chemotypes that differ in their composition.

The study of knock-out mice shows that the Toll-like receptor TLR4 is an important receptor for bacterial LPS (Hoshino et al, 1999).
