also: gastric foveolar cells. These cells cover the inside of the stomach and line the lumen of the glandular stomach in the corpus and antrum. Foveolar cells produce a viscous mucus that protects the stomach from gastric acid (see also: mucus cells). Depending on the location, foveolar cells are being referred to also as surface mucous cells, pit cells (see: gastric pit cells), or mucous neck cells. These cells line the gastric mucosa and gastric pits (Karam et al, 1999).
