[growth/differentiation factor-1] This factor is expressed specifically in embryonic brain and nerve tissues. It is a member of the TGF-beta family (Lee et al, 1990). GDF1 is most homologous to Xenopus laevis Vg-1 (52 %). At the DNA level the human and the murine factor show a sequence homology of 87 % (Storm et al, 1994). The GDF1 cDNA predicts a protein of 357 amino acids (38.6 kDa). Genomic Southern analysis indicates that GDF1 may be highly conserved across species. GDF1, which is probably a secreted glycoprotein, functions as a growth and differentiation factor in neuronal tissues.
