[Glial growth factor] This factor has been isolated from the conditioned medium of glial cells, bovine pituitaries, and in large amounts from human schwannomas (Brockes 1981; Brockes et al, 1986; Lemke and Brockes, 1984).
GGF is a basic protein of 31 kDa that forms dimers of 56 kDa. This factor has been renamed GGF-1 following the isolation of two other species, designated GGF-2 (approximately 59 kDa) and GGF-3 (approximately 45 kDa) (Goodearl et al, 1993).
Sequence data indicate that all three molecular forms of GGF are derived from a single copy gene which itself has been shown to encode erbB2 ligands (see:
