[platelet glycoprotein 4] This designation pertains to glycoproteins isolated from platelet membranes and resolved on SDS-PAGE gels (Clemetson et al, 1977). The fourth major band observed in such gels, glycoprotein 4 (GP4 [platelet glycoprotein 4]), has been given the designation CD36 in the nomenclature of CD antigens. In older references, the protein is sometimes being referred to as glycoprotein 3b (GPIIIb [platelet glycoprotein 3b; platelet glycoprotein IIIb]). The term CD36 is now the term in general use.
