This cell type is found in the basal part of the olfactory epithelium just basal to olfactory sensory neurons. In rodents, Horizontal basal cells are interspersed among Globose basal cells. In humans, the Globose basal cells possess the characteristics of both cell types found in rodents (Hahn et al, 2005; Thakur et al, 2013).
Globose basal cells are thought to have some characteristics of stem cells (Jang et al, 2014), and are sometimes being referred to as Globose basal stem cells.
