[Galleria mellonella protein-24] This protein (23.7 kDa; 219 amino acids) has been isolated by Park et al (2005) in the hemolymph of the wax moth, Galleria mellonella. The protein is involved in the activation of the prophenoloxidase cascade, which is regarded as a critical immune reaction in insect hemolymph. This activating activity is significantly stronger than that of an unrelated hemolymph protein, Apolipophorin III. Thus, the protein is thought to play a role in insect innate immunity.
For other proteins/peptides with functions in innate immunity and/or antimicrobial activities see also: Innate immunity and defense peptides Dictionary.
