The term innate immunity refers to a system of primary reactions elicited by organisms in response to invading microorganisms, including Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria, DNA and RNA viruses, fungi, and protozoa without initially requiring the activation of any slower acting adaptive immunity effector mechanisms (adaptive immune cells (B-cells, T-cells), and other inflammatory cells) (Bals, 2000; Agerberth and Gudmundsson, 2006).
