This alloantigen has been implicated in refractoriness to platelet transfusion, neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia, and posttransfusion purpura. It is caused by a gene polymorphism resulting in a Tyr703Ser substitution of CD109 and yielding the alleles Gov(a) and Gov(b) (Kelton et al, 1998; Schuh et al, 2002). In the nomenclature the designation for these alloantigens is HPA-15 [human platelet antigen-15].
