These proteins constitute a class of immune recognition proteins (pattern recognition receptors) identified initially in the Silkworm Bombyx mori for their ability to bind Gram-negative bacteria (Lee et al, 1996). These proteins are found only in invertebrates and contain a protein domain that is similar to several bacterial glucanases.
