[Head involution defective] The Drosophila melanogaster Hid gene (CG5123), called wrinkled originally, encodes a protein of 410 amino acids that is involved in cell death by apoptosis. The protein contains an RHG sequence motif.
Flies with mutations in the Hid gene are characterized by a general decrease in cell death by apoptosis, which is most noticeably in the head region but is observed also in other tissues of the embryo (Abbott and Lengyel, 1991; Grether et al, 1995).
