[homeotic gene]
These genes have been identified originally by mutations (homeotic mutations) causing aberrant segment development or replacement of one body structure by a different one in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Examples of such genes are antennapedia, bithorax, engrailed, fushi tarazu.
Homeotic genes comprise a large Gene family. The genes are organized in clusters expressed in the developing embryo in complex temporal and spatial patterns and with a positional hierarchy. The proteins encoded by homeotic genes have been found to contain an evolutionarily highly conserved region, the so-called homeo box or homeo domain.
