[inflammation modulatory protein] This protein is encoded by cowpox virus and other pathogenic poxviruses including variola virus (Shchelkunov et al, 1998). It is a highly conserved functional homolog of vaccinia virus complement control protein (VCP) (Miller et al, 1997).
IMP modulates the complement-activated inflammatory response in vivo. Injection of cowpox virus lacking IMP into the footpads of mice causes greater and longer-lasting tissue damage with more hemorrhage than wild-type cowpox virus (Miller et al, 1997; Kotwal et al, 1998).
