[latent infection membrane protein-1]; this protein is encoded in the genome of Epstein-Barr virus. The protein is known also as BNLF1 [EBV BNLF1], p63, or p63/LMP. The protein has been detected in B-cells immortalised by Epstein-Barr virus. It functions as an oncogene that can transform rodent fibroblasts, inducing anchorage-independent growth and rendering transformed cells tumorigenic in nude mice (Wang et al, 1985; Baichwal and Sugden, 1988).
