Lacis cells are flat, elongated cells with extensive fine cytoplasmic processes found outside the kidney glomerulus near the macula densa and bound laterally by afferent and efferent arterioles. They are part of the juxtaglomerular cell complex, which consists of the epithelioid cells (granular cells) and agranular cells. These agranular Lacis cells are sometimes being referred to also as Goormaghtigh cells (Bucher and Reale, 1962; after the Belgian pathologist Norbert Goormaghtigh), Polkissen cells [polar cushion cells], or simply extraglomerular mesangial cells.
