[lymphokine, lymphokine-activated, lymphokine-specific]
This is a generic name for a number of unrelated secreted proteins of 12-30 kDa produced by various populations of lymphocytes following their stimulation by an antigen or other modes of cell activation.
These factors act antigen-unspecifically at nano to picomolar concentrations. They may, however, preferentially stimulate some reaction in the presence of antigens.
This term was coined in the 60ies and initially referred to soluble proteins that are neither antibodies nor complement components and that are produced by antigen-stimulated lymphocytes. Later this term was used also for other factors produced by mitogen-stimulated lymphocytes, cultured cell lines, non-lymphoid
