This term refers to the neoplastic transformation and proliferation of lymphoid cells, which originates in tissues other than the bone marrow.
Tumors developing from lymphocytes are called collectively lymphomas. These malignancies are very heterogeneous, reflecting the many different types of lymphocytes from which they originate.
The term Hodgkin's lymphoma refers to one particular entity and all other lymphoma are classified generically as non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This is an artificial division and modern classification systems are more specific, although many terms used are still descriptive. and take into account the specific cell type, identified not only by histological features revealing the normal cell type resembling the malignant cells
