[membrane-associated neurotransmitter stimulating factor] MANS modulates sympathetic neurotransmitter expression and promotes ciliary neuron survival in cell culture. MANS induces the production of SP (substance P) in ganglion cells in vitro and in vivo (Adler et al, 1989; Wong and Kessler, 1987).
The biological effects and biochemical properties of MANS are similar to those of CNTF (ciliary neurotrophic factor). Preparations of MANS have been shown to contain CNTF or a CNTF-like protein and MANS has been shown to be identical with CNTF (Rao et al, 1992).
