[cell cultures, cultured cells]
Cell culture is a technique allowing growth and propagation of many different cell types of higher organisms under controlled conditions (Butler and Dawson, 1986; Freshney, 1983; Jacoby and Pastan, 1979).
Culture dishes may be of glass or plastic and may have pre-treated surfaces also, coated, for example with collagen, polylysine, or components of the extracellular matrix to facilitate the attachment of the cells. Some sophisticated techniques also employ entire layers of adherent cells, known as Feeder cells, which are used to support the growth of cells with more fastidious growth requirements (see also: BMC, bone marrow culture).
