Noxa is one of the BH3-only proteins with a single BH3 domain and no other BCL2 homology domains.
Noxa has been identified as a mediator of apoptosis mediated by expression of the tumor suppressor p53 (Oda et al, 2000). Expression of Noxa in primary mouse cells exposed to X-ray irradiation depends on p53. If Noxa induction is blocked this results in the suppression of cell death by apoptosis. Overexpression of Noxa in mouse embryonic fibroblasts shows that Noxa localizes to mitochondria and interacts with anti-apoptotic members of the BCL2 family. This causes activation of caspase-9 and
