Nrz

Zebrafish Nrz is a protein related to BCL2 and considered a homolog of the chicken gene NR-13. Nrz is a mitochondrial protein that antagonizes the activity of the cell death protein BAX. The gene encoding Nrz is expressed mainly during early development. Insufficient expression leads to alterations of the somites and this correlates with an increase in cell death by apoptosis. Earlier during development of the gastrula, a lack of Nrz protein can cause gastrulation arrest independently of apoptosis (Arnaud et al, 2006).
