[pathogen-associated molecular patterns] This general term refers to any kind of molecules (see also: molecular patterns) that are produced by pathogens and alert an organism to intruding pathogens. Frequently, PAMPs are conserved invariant products of microbial metabolism (Janeway and Medzhitov, 2002).
The term MAMPs [microbe-associated molecular patterns] has been proposed for structures in any pathogen-derived molecule that is perceived via direct interaction with a host defence receptor. Originally used for plant innate immune defense (Mackey and McFall, 2006), this term has been applied also to refer to such structures in other multicellular organisms.
