This general collective term refers to any kind of molecules that are either produced by host cells themselves or are derived from invading micro-organisms. These molecular patterns serve as various kinds of danger signals (see also: alarmins) by acting as ligands for pattern recognition receptors. Signaling through these receptors causes cells to release multiple cytokines. The activation of cell types of the innate and adaptive immune systems can trigger sterile inflammation or prolong pathogen-induced responses through the production of pro-inflammatory mediators and the recruitment of leukocytes to sites of injury and infection.
